The Icing Flower Thief
You say you do not want a birthday cake,
But steal the sugared roses anyway;
You look surprised at all the fuss we make,
Though you've been counting down since yesterday.
You notice who has nowhere else to sit,
And pull another chair into the light;
You never mention that you thought of it,
You only ask if everyone's all right.
May you have mornings slow enough for tea,
And time for all the plans you tucked away;
May you be loved for who you get to be,
Not just for what you manage every day.
When you lean in, the candles paint your face,
Your wish goes up in one small curl of blue;
And I look round this noisy, crowded place
At all the lives made happier by you.
"For the one who steals the icing flowers and makes room for everyone."
