The Future You Never Promised
You said their name; the room became too small
For everything I'd hoped and never said;
I smiled and made a joke about it all
While losing something only in my head.
I turned your kindness into private signs,
An answer in the way you passed the tea;
But those were only stories between lines
You never wrote, and never meant for me.
I wasn't left; you never said you'd stay,
Or asked me to imagine we were two;
I built a house from things you didn't say,
Then blamed the empty rooms on losing you.
I hope they treat you gently, as they should,
And meet you when the difficult days start;
It hurts to wish you nothing but the good,
And mean it with this uninvited heart.
"For the future you built alone, without anyone else promising it."
